DMG is used for disk image files on Macintosh computers running Mac OS X. This file extension replaces the older file extension IMG which was discontinued during the release of later series of Mac operating systems. A .DMG file is the disc image file used by MAC OSX. It is an exact copy of a hard disk or compact disk. The DMG file can be burned to a CD or mount as a normal volume on Macintosh computers.
